Public Lecture: How International Sailing and the Maritime Community Contribute to Sustainable Development

On November 8, 2024, George Gabedava, an Associate Professor at BNTU, delivered a public lecture for students and vocational students on the topic "How International Sailing and the Maritime Community Contribute to Sustainable Development."

The lecture explored the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and examined how international maritime transport plays a vital role in achieving them. Particular emphasis was given to the International Maritime Organization (IMO), a specialized UN agency responsible for ensuring the safety, security and environmental sustainability of global maritime operations.

Mr. Gabedava elaborated on how maritime transport underpins global trade and highlighted the sector’s environmental advantages. He detailed how maritime transport relates to each of the SDGs, from poverty eradication to fostering global partnerships aimed at achieving these goals.

The presentation underscored the significance of the maritime sector in tackling global challenges, including climate change, protecting ocean ecosystems and promoting sustainable economic growth.
