BNU Representative at the Rectors' Council Meeting

18 June 2026

On June 17, 2026, Lali Khvedelidze, the Head of Administration-Chancellor of BNU, attended the Rectors' Council meeting held at Shota Meskhia Zugdidi State University. The meeting, led by Givi Mikanadze, the Minister of Education, Science and Youth, was attended by rectors and representatives of both public and private Georgian universities.

The Council members discussed the ongoing processes within the higher education system reform and the draft of the new funding model. One of the main directions of the reform is to ensure full tuition funding for citizens of Georgia at the bachelor's and master's levels in state universities. According to the Minister, the new two-component model is based on base funding and funding tied to the fulfillment of state orders. As the Minister stated, this will, on one hand, ensure the institutional sustainability and financial autonomy of state universities and on the other hand, promote the development of a system focused on quality, results and national priorities.

It was noted that representatives of the World Bank were actively involved in the process of developing the draft of the new higher education funding model. The meeting was conducted in a discussion format and the Council members made joint decisions regarding a number of issues.

The Rectors' Council meeting was also attended by Zviad Gabisonia, Deputy Minister of Education, Science and Youth of Georgia, Ivane Abashidze, Director of the Maritime Transport Agency and representatives of the Ministry of Culture.
