4 March 2026

From 23 to 27 February 2026, the 12th Session of the Sub-Committee on Human Element, Training and Watchkeeping (HTW 12) was held at the headquarters of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) in London.

Batumi Navigation University was represented at this high-level international meeting by Professor George Gabedava, Head of the International Relations Service of the University, who participated in the session as an official delegate of the International Association of Maritime Universities (IAMU).

The session brought together maritime education and regulatory experts from around the world and concluded with significant progress on several strategic agenda items. The central focus of HTW 12 was the continued Comprehensive Review of the International Convention on Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping for Seafarers, 1978 (STCW Convention) and the STCW Code. During the session, the Sub-Committee initiated substantive drafting work on proposed amendments, building upon previously identified regulatory gaps and detailed submissions by Member States and international organizations.

Batumi Navigation University remains committed to contributing to the advancement of high-quality maritime education and training and to further strengthening its active engagement within leading international maritime organizations and professional networks.
