IAMU Early Career Academic Forum (ECAF 2026)

From 13–15 July 2026, Professor George Gabedava, Head of the International Relations Service at Batumi Navigation University (BNU), participated in the 1st IAMU Early Career Academic Forum (ECAF 2026), entitled "Charting a Course for the Future of Maritime Education, Training and Research," held in Tokyo, Japan.

The forum brought together 40 early-career academics and researchers from leading maritime higher education institutions around the world. Its primary objective was to discuss current challenges in maritime education, training and research, strengthen international academic cooperation and develop future collaborative initiatives.

During the forum, participants worked in international working groups on innovative projects that will continue over the coming year. These projects are aimed at enhancing the quality of maritime education, advancing academic research, and promoting the exchange of knowledge and best practices among universities.

An important part of the visit included an introductory meeting and an academic tour at the Tokyo University of Marine Science and Technology (TUMSAT), where participants explored the university's modern educational and research infrastructure, innovative laboratories and the latest practices implemented in the field of maritime education.

The forum was organized by the International Association of Maritime Universities (IAMU) with the support of The Nippon Foundation. It serves as an important international platform for strengthening academic cooperation among maritime universities, fostering innovation and supporting the professional development of the next generation of maritime academic leaders.
