The student self-government at BNU was established in 2008, following the enrollment of the first cohort of students in undergraduate programs.
The Self-Government of students and vocational students at Batumi Navigation University represents BNU students and vocational students. As their representative body, it operates independently of the BNU administration, exercising the powers granted by Georgian legislation, BNU's internal regulations and its own statutes, both within and beyond the university.
The current student self-government elections were held in 2026, with a term of office lasting 2 years. It consists of 8 students from the Maritime-Engineering Faculty, 1 from the Logistics Faculty and 3 from the Vocational Education Department.
Giorgi Meladze, a second-year student a bachelor's program in Maritime Navigation at the Faculty of Maritime-Engineering, serves as the chairman of BNU’s student self-government.
The student self-government is responsible for:
- Protecting the interests of students and vocational students and ensuring their participation in BNU’s management
- Representing the interests of students and vocational students in dealings with BNU’s governing bodies
- Developing proposals aimed at improving faculty and university management, enhancing the quality of education or addressing emerging issues
- Evaluating the educational process, as well as the performance of academic and visiting staff, either independently or in collaboration with BNU's quality assurance service.
- Organizing meetings, debates, discussions, training sessions and a variety of educational, literary, sports, cultural, entertainment and scientific events, as permitted by law, to achieve the objectives outlined in its charter.
- Justifying, requesting, receiving and responsibly managing appropriate funding.
- Establishing connections with student self-governments and associations of both Georgian and foreign educational institutions.
- Collaborating with other student unions, governmental and non-governmental organizations, both locally and internationally.
The goals of BNU’s student self-government include:
- Protecting the personal dignity, rights, freedoms, and legal interests of students and vocational students, regardless of gender, skin color, religion, political views, citizenship, ethnic background, academic performance or social status
- Ensuring that students and vocational students participate in BNU's management and decision-making processes
- Participating in the educational process and contributing to the assurance of education quality
- Supporting student and vocational student initiatives, fostering personal potential and assisting in problem-solving
- Guaranteeing equal opportunities for all students and vocational students to participate in BNU events
- Promoting shared human values among students and vocational students, cultivating a sense of civic responsibility, respect for the law and encouraging a healthy lifestyle
- Advancing BNU's development, its integration into the broader educational landscape and involving BNU students in these processes.
