Profession: Ship Engine Room Operation

Program Objective

The objective of the program is to prepare a competitive, practically oriented specialist—an Able Seafarer Engine (Engine Room Rating)—with competencies that comply with the requirements of current Georgian legislation and international standards. The graduate understands the specifics of the profession and the duties to be performed, possesses the theoretical knowledge and practical skills necessary for professional activities, and is able to perform the duties and responsibilities of an engine room rating, including the operation, maintenance and repair of ship machinery, electrical equipment, electronic equipment and control systems, care of persons on board, control of ship operations, and other related duties.

Professional Qualification Awarded: Secondary Vocational Qualification in Ship Engine Room Operation

Employment Areas and Opportunities

An Engine Room Rating may be employed on merchant vessels (including oil tankers, chemical tankers, bulk carriers, container ships, gas carriers and other types of vessels), passenger ships, port auxiliary vessels, fishing vessels and other types of watercraft.

An Engine Room Rating may be employed in support-level positions on board vessels, including: Engine Room Watch Rating; Motorman; Donkeyman; Fitter-Welder.

Potential employment opportunities also include public and private institutions operating in areas related to maritime transport services and operations.

Admission Requirements

• Complete general education;
  A medical certificate (Form No. 086 or No. 100) issued, in accordance with the established procedure, by a selected medical institution. The list of authorized medical institutions is available on the website of the Maritime Transport Agency: www.mta.gov.ge

Learning Outcomes Corresponding to the Awarded Qualification

Upon completion of the program, the graduate will be able to:

• Operate ship machinery;
• Perform maintenance and repair of electrical equipment, electronic equipment and control systems;
• Provide care for persons on board;
• Provide medical assistance;
• Use firefighting equipment and respond to fires;
• Prevent marine pollution;
• Participate in engine room watchkeeping duties;
• Perform maintenance of boilers, machinery, equipment and systems in the engine room.
