Ship Safety Officer

 

The course is in accordance with the standard of competence as outlined in the Guidelines on Training and Certification for Shipboard Safety Officers based on the STCW Code Tables A-II/2 and A-III/3, IMO Model Course 3.11 and Code of Safe Working practice.

Every ship appoints a Ship Safety Officer to handle important safety issues related to the ship and the crew. The safety officer acts as the safety advisor on board ships and ensures that all requirements related to health and safety is met. On the basis of risk assessments and investigations, the ship safety officer makes recommendations to the master on health and safety matters. It is the duty of the safety officer to look out for potential hazards and means of preventing incidents on board ship

Upon completion of the course, trainee will be able:

  • Understand the requirements of the International Management System (ISM).
  • Apply the requirements of the Safety Management System on board a ship (SMS).
  • Organize safe operations on board a ship and prevention of pollution.
  • Apply the methods of conducting additional training on board a ship for safety and environmental protection.
  • Safety investigation of Casualties & Incidents.

Entry standards

For entry to the course the candidate should present:

  • Certificate of Competency or Certificate of Proficiency or educational diploma;
  • Passport or Seaman’s Book or Seafarer’s Identity Document;
  • Seafarer’s Medical Certificate

Course duration: 3 days
